SPRY Foundation - Setting Priorities for Retirement Years

SPRY Conducts SHIP Internet Training

January 22, 2003
On January 13-14, 2003, SPRY conducted an Internet training session for Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIP) staff in New Jersey. The sessions instructed the workers in the use of e-mail and the World Wide Web, with the goal of improving their effectiveness in working with older adults and caregivers. Dr. Ann Benbow, SPRY's Director of Technology and Adult Learning, led the training, using materials originally developed for SPRY's Master Training program for Information and Referral/Assistance (I&R/A) Specialists, but customized for the needs of SHIP staff.

SHIP staff members are both paid and volunteer workers who provide objective information about health insurance needs to older adults and caregivers at the community level, helping them to understand and interpret aspects of Medicare, Medicaid, and other entitlement programs that may apply to their particular health situations.

The January 2003 training was supported by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
